The Western Clydesdales made the short trek down the Warrego Highway to take on the Ipswich Jets in the Hostplus Cup on Sunday in what was expected to be a thrilling clash.

However, the Jets – spurred on by a recent win over the Sunshine Coast Falcons – claimed a dominant 48-12 triumph over the Clydesdales to assert their authority in the Western Corridor.

This also marked the first time the Jets have picked up back-to-back wins since July 2022.

Check out the biggest talking points from the clash here.

Buhse does it again

Darling Downs young gun Kaden Buhse has been one of the great success stories of the Clydesdales’ 2024 campaign.

The 19-year-old has crossed over for five tries in his short career and has become a go-to player for Jason Alchin’s side early in the contest.

All five of Buhse’s tries have come inside the first 10 minutes of a game and he scored the first try of the clash against Ipswich after just three minutes.

Ipswich capitalise on extra chances

For much of the contest, the Clydesdales competed strongly with the Jets.

This was most evident by the fact the Clydesdales averaged more than 45m gained per set, just 50cm less than their rivals.

However, it was the hosts’ ruthlessness when given opportunities that defined the clash.

Ipswich’s first try of the game came off the back of a penalty against the Clydesdales while they were in possession and looking to extend their early 6-0 lead.

The second try came off the back of an unlucky six again call where a knock-on was called against the Clydesdales in the final tackle of a Jets set.

They then scored off a six again call early in the second half to take a 30-12 lead.

The sixth Ipswich try of the game came off the back of an out on the full kick by the Clydesdales inside their own half.

Lenehan leads by example

One of the key reasons why the Clydesdales were able to compete throughout the middle of the ground was the hard running from Blake Lenehan.

The prop ran for 141m from 15 runs and dictated the tempo of the game during the opening 20 minutes.

He led the way in metres gained in the forward pack, with only electric backs Esom Ioka and Levi Helleur-Atiga gaining more metres for the visitors.

Seven-minute surge changes the game

The Clydesdales started the game strongly and had Ipswich on the back foot in the opening stages of the encounter.

However, the game was flipped on its head when the Jets scored three tries between the 18th and 25th minute.

This came off the back of several sets where the Clydesdales seemed destined to extend their lead beyond just the six points from the early try but did not have the end product to match their ascendancy.

The hosts soared out to a 18-6 lead just minutes after trailing and did not look back for the rest of the game.

Titans five-eighth’s deadeye accuracy

With eight different players crossing over for eight tries for the Jets, Gold Coast Titans and Ipswich five-eighth Tanah Boyd had a busy day at the tee.

The classy playmaker was perfect from behind the tee as he slotted through all eight of his conversion attempts.

Boyd finished with a game-high 16 points, with no other player from either side scoring more than four.
