BOXING: Steve Spark’s opportunity to climb up the 2020 world boxing ladder has become a reality after having his new-year wish granted.

“This is the one we wanted,” Spark’s trainer-manager Brendon Smith said after locking in a blockbuster meeting for the Toowoomba super lightweight with Continental and Oceania champion Terry Tzouramanis.

The fight, at a yet-to-be-confirmed time and places, carries with it a likely top-15 world ranking for the winner.

Spark took huge career strides last year with his latest Australasian championship win over James MacDonald at Toowoomba’s Rumours International in November taking the 23-year-old’s record to nine knockout wins from 10 pro fights.

The more experienced Tzouramanis has built an enviable 27-fight record with the 34-year-old Victorian boasting 23 wins from his 27 bouts.

At his two latest fights, Tzouramanis claimed the WBC Asian Boxing Council Continental super lightweight belt with a points win over Gaige Ireland before landing the WBA Oceania super lightweight title with victory on points over Brandon Ogilvie.

“We haven’t set a date and venue for the fight yet, but it is locked in,” Smith said.

“It’s going to happen and it’s our promotion.

“We naturally would love to stage it here in Toowoomba, in around early May perhaps, but there are a few things we need to work through before confirming everything.

“This is number one and two in the country with Tzouramanis holding WBA and WBC regional championships.

“This is huge for Steve with the winner set to secure a world top-15 ranking.”

# Tickets remain on sale for Friday night’s Blood, Sweat & Tears Over 30 Years function in the Clifford Park Grand Atrium where Brendon Smith’s 30-year contribution to Toowoomba Boxing will be recognised.
