There is nothing better than a nailbiting thriller in a grand final and in the AFL Darling Downs decider, it was exactly that.
South Toowoomba Bombers and Downlands College faced off in the under-17s boys showdown with both teams not giving the other an inch from start to finish.
Downloads were looking for a fairytail finish in their first year in the competition and things were going their way as they lead 2.2 (14) to Bombers two straight goals.
The experience of the Bombers, who have played off in the last eight grand finals struck back in the second quarter keeping Downlands goalless to take a nine-point lead into the main break.
As fans sat on the edge of their seats in the second half, the match continued to seesaw with no side letting up the pressure.
But it was the Bombers who managed to hold on winning by the barest of margins becoming the villain in Downloads fairytale but it was Bombers’ Daiki Burns, who kicked four goals became South Toowoomba’s hero.
The Bombers held onto win 5.5 (35) to 4.10 (34).
The girls was an equaling exciting contest but for a very different reason.
The decider proved to be a step too far for Goondiwindi Hawks who were playing in their first grand final.
Held scoreless in the first half Hawks showed plenty of fighting spirit in the remaining three quarters but were soundly beaten 10.13-73 to 4.3-27.
Downlands shared the goals with five players recording majors in the games.
