RUGBY LEAGUE: The lamplighters answered another challenge, with a familiar face firmly on their tails.

From a huge round six, these are the seven things we learnt from the Toowoomba Rugby League.

ROOSTER BACKS SPOILT FOR CHOICE

Things are going pretty well down at Pillar St at the moment, and their backline depth is a big reason for that.

They welcomed back Dylan Chown against Newtown, who lined up at halfback, keeping Brock Diment at the back.

With the likes of Chown, Dwayne Duncan, Coedie Tandy and Ben Cook available to fill the halves, Valleys really are spoiled for choice.

AGE OLD RIVALRY STILL THE BEST

There’s plenty of classic rivalries in the TRL, but I believe the Wattles vs Warwick one stands at the top.

Even with both sides missing key players, fans were treated to a spectacle at Platz Oval of good, hard football.

I’m tipping there would’ve been some sore bodies on Sunday, with both teams playing at an extremely physical level.

BOARS BANKING VALUABLE WINS

Goondiwindi continues to impress as they remain the only undefeated TRL team, but perhaps the thing to hang their hats on is their ability to get it done on the road.

They claimed the scalp of Dalby, giving them three wins and a draw from their four away games.

They’re putting themselves right in contention with a huge backload of home games later in the season.

BETROS CONTINUES GOLDEN RUN

We spoke last week that everything Brothers do needs to come through halfback Sam Betros.

He was at it again at the weekend, scoring five tries as they downed Pittsworth.

Betros is at his brilliant best when attacking the line, and it’s outstanding to watch him go about his business watch at present.

LEE HOME AT THE BACK

In a year where fullbacks have really turned it on, the man they call Wiggles is right at home as custodian for Highfields.

Jarrod Lee had another superb outing as the Eagles improved to 4-2 for the season, scoring a hat-trick.

You can put two of those down to his positioning and knowing exactly where to be at the right time.

LIPP HAS THE BALL ON A STRING

There are few players who look like they have all the time in the world when they’ve got the ball in hand.

One is David McGrady, and another is Haydan Lipp, who was again strong as Gatton defeated Southern Suburbs.

He’s been a joy to watch this season, and he’s finding the form that puts him right among the elite players in this competition.

WARWICK ABLE TO TURN IT ON

The winning streak of the Cowboys women was under the pump as they found themselves down 12-6 with 15 minutes to play against Dalby.

In the fashion of a good team, they went bang, piling on four tries to close out the contest and a quality win.

Amanda Hinch is in sublime form at the back, highlighted by an 80m scamper to level the scores.
