Sent out as a $41 chance, the three-year-old shocked almost everyone by unleashing a powerful finish to blouse the more-fancied Goody Goody on the line.
One person that wasn’t taken by surprise was his trainer Phillip Cox, who thought he showed enough at home to play his part.
“It was a nice win,” Cox said.
“He had a couple of good jumpouts, but as a first starter you never know how they will go.
“I didn’t go around overly confident, but I wasn’t surprised when he raced well.”
Forever Volo gets the chance to go back-to-back when lining up in the Caw Bookkeeping Class 1 Handicap (1110m) tomorrow evening.
Drawn in barrier six, Cox hopes that he is able to enjoy a similar run and similar result to his last outing.
“He’s drawn in six so he won’t be in close,” he said.
“He might be one or two out. He came around the corner four-deep on debut, and he’s been going well since that run.”
With the services of Georgina Cartwright unavailable due to earlier commitments at Doomben, Cox said he was happy to go with Ben Moffat on board.
“It was lovely to see him get a winner after all that time away,” he said.
“Ben has helped me out with a few jumpouts so I thought we’d give him the ride. There won’t be a lot of dead weight, and he’s a good rider.”
Cox’s other runner for the evening comes in the form of Forever Ben.
Similar to his stablemate, the three-year-old made his debut at Clifford Park a fortnight ago, however didn’t enjoy the same fortune.
A torrid run saw him finish close to the tail, but Cox said he should be better for the run.
“He got galloped on the other day,” he said.
“He’s a big horse and is still learning to gallop.
“He’s drawn out wide so he’ll jump out and probably sit midfield, but he’s come on well since that first run.”
The eight-race card gets underway at 5.01pm, with the last jumping at 9.10pm.
It starts a big week of racing for Clifford Park, with Toowoomba to host a non-TAB meeting on Melbourne Cup day on Tuesday.
# BUNYA Park will host the annual Dalby Rugby Raceday tomorrow.
Five races will take place at the sold-out event, headlined by the Dalby Rugby Races Benchmark 60 Handicap (1400m).
