RACING: Patience was a virtue for Wendy Peel at Clifford Park.

The talented apprentice made the trip to Toowoomba after three rides at the Gold Coast earlier in the day, returning home with a double.

It started with Searing Speed ($12), who launched a powerful finish to claim the Subzero Airconditioning Class 2 Plate (1850m), running over the top of favourite Toucan Sam ($1.70).

Peel said early pace in the race meant it was run to suit, giving her the chance to finish strongly.

“He takes a while to build up momentum,” Peel said.

“He keeps grinding and working into it, and he can get further.

“I thought they went pretty quick up front and he was able to work into it nicely.

“I was happy with his last run (at Ipswich). He got back and then had to come around them before copping a bad bump.”

Peel’s double was brought up aboard the progressive Winter Rain ($5.50), who made it a hat-trick in the Toowoomba Plastics BM60 Handicap (1300m).

Settling with just one behind her, a swift move saw the pair move into the race, finding enough late to hold off Dancing Angel ($6) by a half-length.

“She’s a nice little filly and a real trier,” Peel said.

“When I rode her at Ipswich she got back in the field and relate really well.

“Last night I said to the owners that there looked like there would be plenty of speed so it would be best to go back and come around them.

“The speed was on, but she was quite fresh and raced a bit keen, so I had to get her rolling forward a bit earlier than I wanted to.

“She’s such a gutsy filly. She hit the line strong and there’s definitely a midweek win in her.”

AROUND THE TRACKS
Roma hosted the $20,000 Ladies Bracelet Open Handicap (1200m) at its non-TAB meeting.

Hezhome ($2.80) was sent out as favourite, however was no match for High Cost ($3.50), with the Mark Johnstone-trained gelding saluting by 2 ½ lengths for jockey Paul Randall.

Apprentice Montana Philpot had a riding double for the afternoon, with both winners coming for Craig Smith.
