Brisbane has won the battle for Kotoni Staggs with the Broncos staving off poaching threats to secure the strike weapon in a $2.8 million retention coup.

The Staggs development comes as the Broncos up the ante for halfback Adam Reynolds, with coach Kevin Walters keen to invite the South Sydney skipper north for a tour of Brisbane’s $27 million high-performance facility.

The Broncos are looking to partner Staggs and Reynolds in the halves next season and stage one has been completed with Staggs advising Brisbane hierarchy he will not be leaving the club.

As first reported by News Corp, Staggs has been offered a four-year deal worth $700,000 a season and Broncos bosses have formalised his retention until the end of 2025.

It is a huge boost for the Broncos, who were under siege from the likes of the Titans, Parramatta and the Knights, who attempted to lure Staggs away from Red Hill with offers of up to $800,000 annually.

As speculation intensifies that boom Brisbane winger Xavier Coates could quit the club to join Melbourne next season, Staggs confirmed he is staying loyal to the Broncos.

“My future is here at the Broncos,” he said.

“I’ve always been told to chase my dream and my dream as a young kid was to be here at the Broncos, and I’m going to be here for another four years.

“I’m really happy.

“Reflecting back to when I was growing up as a young kid and kicking the footy around the park imagining I was in Broncos colours, to be able to make my debut and play here for three years and then to get another four years on top of that with a bunch of boys that I’ve known for a while now, I’m pretty proud of that.

“We’ve got a lot to look forward to as a club … I want to continue to grow and help the younger players out and be a leader and a mentor.”

Staggs is currently sidelined with a knee reconstruction and is set to face sanctions from the NRL integrity unit after being ejected from a Brisbane pub a fortnight ago.

But there is no questioning his potential with Staggs on the cusp of NSW Origin selection and set to play five-eighth for the Broncos next season.

“I’ve made mistakes off the field but I’m learning my lessons and from here onwards I want to be the best person I can be and be a role model, it’s up to me to get my head in the right place and move forward,” he said.

“I’m here to send a message out to the fans that I’m here to stay at the Brisbane Broncos, this is the club that I always dreamed of playing for and it’s my home.”

Walters said Staggs’ loyalty was a statement of faith in the struggling Broncos.

“Kotoni’s passion for the Broncos is what has kept him at the club as well as his competitive drive – he’s the type of player that we need here,” he said.

“He grew up watching the Broncos win premierships and he wants to win one here himself.

“We have a terrific core group of players signed to long-term contracts who have all been through the Broncos system, and Kotoni adds to that – he has committed to us because he believes the future here is bright.”

Having secured Staggs, Walters will now look to fly Reynolds to Queensland for a tour of Brisbane’s state-of-the-art set-up at Red Hill.

Walters met with Reynolds in Sydney last Sunday and the Broncos are armed with a three-year deal worth $2.4 million, plus the Brisbane captaincy.

Broncos prop Payne Haas has appealed for the club to bring Reynolds to Red Hill.

“He would be a massive signing for our club if we got Adam Reynolds,” he said.

“You can see his kicking game is the best of any half in the comp with Nathan Cleary and his game management would be perfect for our young team.

“We have a really good forward pack, but we just need that senior game manager to take us to the next level.”
