RUGBY LEAGUE: Jake Simpkin will become the latest Toowoomba junior to make his first grade debut this weekend.
The crafty hooker has been named to start for the Wests Tigers in their NRL round six clash with the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday.
A Southern Suburbs junior, Simpkin was a part of the Tigers U18 grand final victory in 2018.
In the same year, he played a leading role for St Mary’s College in taking out the Confraternity Shield.
A regular in Darling Downs representative sides and the Western Mustangs, Simpkin has represented Queensland at both the U16s and U18s level
Simpkin signed with the Wests Tigers from 2020 onwards, however missed out on the chance to play regular reserve grade due to the season being cancelled.
Engaged in a battle with Jacob Liddle for the starting hooker role in round one, Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire opted to go with the latter.
Not letting the setback get him down, Simpkin has been impressive for Western Suburbs in the NSW Cup, scoring in each of the Magpies five games, including a double in round two.
