TENNIS : Few things stir interest during January in Australia more than tennis.

The Australian Open has evolved into one the world’s most watched and talked-about sport events.

So what better time is there than now for Tennis Australia to reach out to Aussie tennis fans – serious and casual alike – with an offer to have a swing of the racquet themselves.

And chances are if you live on the southern Darling Downs there is a club close by ready to introduce you to or welcome you back on court with a new brand of tennis.

Nine tennis clubs in Queensland’s south region have joined a national effort led by Tennis Australia to improve the health of the regional population through a more sociable and relaxed approach to tennis.

Open Court Sessions are a new social tennis experience designed to get more adults on the court.

Open Court Sessions launches as the Australian Open is in full swing, and encourages people to come together over great food, drink and music, with a social hit of tennis on the side.

There’s no longer the need to join a club, sign up for lessons or commit to a weekly competition.

Instead players can participate in a range of dynamic tennis activities, putting a spin on the traditional game with entertaining new formats and a variety of equipment.

All skill levels are welcome and can join in the fun with no strings attached.

Toowoomba Tennis Association president Allen Smythe said the new concept is the sport’s way of offering players a less formal tennis experience.

“It’s about attracting people or former players to a fun way of playing tennis,” Smythe said.

“It’s a format Tennis Australia is keen to try and I think it offers a whole new experience to anyone wanting to become involved.”

Participating south Queensland clubs are Toowoomba, Range, Chinchilla, Allora, Roma, Texas, Lockyer, Dalby and Warwick.
