GOLF has commanded the attention of the Garden City's sports community over the past week and it was Toowoomba Golf Club's chance to shine on Monday.
The Middle Ridge course played host to a PGA-sanctioned event that served as a qualifier for this Thursday's New Zealand Open.
It was a first for the club and something general manager Johnathon Zirkler is very proud of.
"We have invested a lot in the course and our facilities recently," Zirkler said.
"To host an event like this is quite an honour for the club and we hope they (the players) go away with a good impression.
"Being able to showcase what we and Toowoomba can offer alongside the Queensland PGA championship at City (Golf Club) is a great opportunity."
Andrew Evans, who finished fourth at the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship, was the first to secure his spot.
Even after the first nine holes - Evans finished red hot carding a 66 (six under par).
"I've been hitting it alright," Evans said.
"I finished fourth at the Queensland PGA and I just continued on from there today (Monday).
"I was even after the first nine holes and came in hot on the back nine.
"The big difference was my putts started to fall - I was finding the fairway and greens the whole time but when my putts fell it all came together."
The top two players from the 18-hole qualifier were given entry to the NZ Open and Evans will be joined by Richard Kulacz.
Kulacz won through after beating out Dale Brandt Richards and Oscar Cadenhead in a sudden death three-way play-off.
The trio all finished at five under it was Kulacz who finished on top. Teeing off on the par four first hole, Brandt Richards and Cadenhead finished with bogeys and Kulacz finished with an even par.
