RACING: Lightly raced Toowoomba four-year-old Maidenover helped underline the advancement in modern veterinary skills when she burst back to racing in good style at Clifford Park last night.
Maidenover ($1.45 fav) made light work of her rivals in her racing comeback for trainer Lindsay Hatch with a dominant display in the Knights Commercial Laundry Class 1 Handicap (1210m).
The Tycoon Ruler mare raced outside leader American Crown for jockey Josh Oliver until heads were turned for home where she drew away to score by 5¼ lengths from Carpe Noctem ($7).
Maidenover’s win kick started a winning spree for Hatch and Oliver who combined to grab the first three wins on the seven-race card.
Maidenover broke through for a spacious Warwick maiden win in April at start number five.
But victory celebrations were short lived when it was later discovered she was carrying bone chips in both knees.
Six months later she has resumed where she left off.
“She’s a lovely mare. You’ve only got to look at her,” Hatch said.
“Her maiden win at Warwick was impressive but we then found chips in both knees after that which required surgery.
“It’s good to them come back like she did tonight.
“You can never be certain what to expect with knee injuries but the latest surgery procedures have really come a long way in healing horses.
“In the past it was a long process getting them back to racing and you could never be confident how successful they might have been.”
Peiridae completed a race-to-race double for the trainer-jockey combo when he saw off a bold challenge from runner-up Accumulated ($19) in the Poindexters Punters Club Class 3 Plate (1050m) at the skinny odds of a $1.12.
Hatch and Oliver wrapped up their winning hat-trick compliments of first starter For My Annie ($2.30 fav) who justified his good first-up support with an all-the-way win over Golden Symphony ($9) in the Corco Maiden Plate (1050m).
AFTER THE LAST
THE WIN
SOMEHOW or other CHAMBERLAIN was allowed to get out to succulent odds of $26 and made underestimating punters pay with an all-the-way win for jockey Cecily Eaton and Kumbia trainer Royce Connolly in the Class 4.
THE TRAINER
PUNTERS prepared to take the shorts about the opening three favourites finished on good terms with themselves when the LINDSAY HATCH trio delivered in good style. It was downhill for the majority of punters from there.
THE RIDER
JOSH OLIVER led the meeting stats with a winning treble while Sunshine Coast jockey NATHAN THOMAS made it two for the night after leading in a Matt Kropp quinella aboard Romakash in the Benchmark 70. EMMA LJUNG also had a multiple winning day. After being successful at the Gold Coast she steered Mishani Istana home in the Benchmark 58 for Toowoomba trainer Jeff Dixon.
FROM THE STAND
Race 1: There was specking for Heaven Help Me at 21.00. American Crown was impossible to lay and the bookie was 7.00 on a 5.00 call for no bets. The favourite and winner Maidenover was backed at 1.90 and then with the late scratchings came into 1.45 and paid well unders on the tote.
Race 2: No real betting done on this race. The punters made it a cup of tea race and would not be tempted at 1.20 for Pieridae. Pieridae had an easy win but was not that convincing for the SP of $1.12.
Race 3: Yazzi Jean was backed on track from 23.00 into 18.00 and the bookie reported that he had not stood one like this for a long time. Tinder Loving was good each way bets at 8.00. The favourite and winner For My Annie was easy to lay at 2.50. There was a phone bet of $1200 at 2.30 and then the price went off. The tote punters got a haircut again.
Race 4: A fair betting race and the bookie got to lay most of the runners. Crazy Good was hard to lay and the bookie was 3.30 on a 3.10 to get some money in. The winner Conquer Mee was the worst way for the bookie with several cash bets at 26.00.
Race 5: Punters only wanted the one runner here in Conquermore; the 2.20 went off quickly on track. The phone then rang with a bet of $2000 at 2.10 and $1000 at 2.00. The bookie shut his eyes and home sailed Chamberlain to save the day.
Race 6: Another good betting race. Pastiche was the one they wanted early with $1000 each way at 11.00. Kazbar Ruby saw money each way at 10.00. The winner Mishani Istana was well supported at 12.00 to give a break square result.
Race 7: The track bookie put up 2.10 Givus A Cuddle and that went off in a flash; then the phones rang with a bet of $2000 at 2.00 and more cash bets at 1.90. Matt Kropp and Nathan Thomas saved the day and the bookie broke square on the night.
