Queensland School Sport Track and Field State Championships

The Queensland School Sport Track and Field State Championships started with a bang today at QSAC. All you need to know from Day 1 action here.

The Queensland School Sport Track and Field State Championships were off to a flying start at QSAC today, with most of the state’s best junior athletics flourishing on day 1.

There was an early record breaking performance by Nahkiyha Mullins-Watt (Sunshine Coast) who launched the javelin 49.98m in the 16 years girls.

The Deception Bay Little Athletics junior from Clontarf Beach school finished ahead of silver medallist Olivia Windolf (Met West), an Ipswich club competitor, and Gold Coast’s Gabriela Marczyk.

The big boys went hammer and thongs at each other during an enthralling hammer throw duel.

Cash Glavish (Sunshine Coast) prevailed in the 13 years from Aspley SHS’s Dilpreet Sharma who claimed the silver medal and BSHS’s Jeriah Slade-Suemai, a bronze medal winner who is the cousin of former Australian under-20 representative Lyvante.

Peregian Beach athlete Eli Melinz (Sunshine Coast) unleashed a winning performance in the 14 years hammer, with silver to Brock Miller (Met North) and bronze to Hudson Schultz (Sunshine Coast).

What a performance it was from the trio.

AB Paterson’s Ewan Walker (Sunshine Coast) then swept to gold in the 15-years hammer, while Coomera Anglican College’s Connor Hopgood, representing South Coast, was the gold medallist in the 16 years hammer from Mitchell Conway (South Coast) and Rory Southward-Ryan. Hopgood was the reigning champion.

St Stephen’s Owen Wang represented his region (South Coast) with distinction to claim gold from Iona’s Ethan Tearle, while Kelvin Grove State College was represented by Amanjeet Samdar (Met North) who stormed to victory in the 18-19 years hammer.

Samdar finished ahead of AB Paterson’s Samuel Brookes and Villanova College’s Matt Greig.

In the year 17s long jump, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School produced a 5.64m effort to win gold. St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School’s Lily Hicks was a silver medallist and CQ’s Cara Cooke the bronze medallist.

Reigning champion in her age group, WMAC’s Lily Vine, produced a gold medal winning effort from Calvary COllege’s Mariam Hall and Xavier Catholic College’s McKenzie Symes (Hervey Bay).

There was more success for the Capricornia region when St Brendan’s Zane Keiler wound up in the shot put to produce a 13.90m effort to claim gold, this time from Nate Bligh (Sunshine Coast) and Jake Hambrook-Smith (Met East).

The Bray Park SHS community had plenty to smile about when Paradise Tuua found winning form in the 13 years discus.

Tuua won for the first time at this level when she sent the discus hurtling 33.92m.

St Peters Lutheran College, Springfield, is well known for its international swimmers like Mollie O’Callaghan and Ella Ramsay, but they have plenty of good athletes as well, including Ka’Mya who finished second to Tuua. The bronze medallist was Estah Muller (Glasshouse Mountain Christian College).

Event 13: Sophie Foran, Jalyn South and Phoenix Mackay.

There was action aplenty in the 15 years javelin which came down to an exciting finish between South Coast’s Jalyn South, Sophie Foran and Pheonix Mackay.

For the third successive year South, from Kings College, Pimpama campus, won from Foran (silver) and Mackay (Bronze).

Marist College Ashgrove also had a winner, Isaac Roche of AFL footy and soccer claim.

Roche won from Leandrew O’Reilly (CAP, Chanel College) and his school mate, Ben Caughley.

Caleb De Vries (Met East) was victorious in his field event, while Jaida Burgoyne (South Coast) won her multi class 100m dash.

From Nerang SHS, Burgoyne ran like the wind to produce a gold medal winning performance from Makayla Elcoate (Sunshine Coast) and Jada McCoombes (Wide Bay). It was a great performance by the kids.

There were many other multi class sprint events, including:

+ 16 years boys, Lachlan Philo (gold), Hunter Laubscher (silver), Bailey Price (bronze);

+ 16 years girls, Wide Bay’s Libby Venner (gold)

+ 15 years boys, Samuel Moseley (gold), Brodie Zikman (silver), Cale Lancaster (bronze);

+ 15 years girls, Matilda Campling (first), Nerissa Clifford (second) and Gloria Copley (third).

There was a thrilling finish in the 14 years high jump when Madeleine Scott, Chloe Taylor and Sadie Dowden went at it.

Event 11: 18-19 years triple jump Jake hambrook-Smith, Zane Keiler and Nate Bligh

Coomera Anglican College’s Chloe Taylor won the day from All Hallows’ Scott and Sadie Dowden, representing Met West (St Peters Lutheran College).
