Replay: Queensland South Africa v Queensland Fiji (U18 boys) - 2024 Pacific Youth Rugby Festival Day 2

The Pacific Youth Rugby Festival is making a triumphant, record-breaking return to the rugby fields of Brisbane this weekend.

Could it be the year of the Springbok or will the Queensland Kiwis young guns take inspiration from a Bledisloe and Olympic Rugby 7s triumph?

Don’t forget about the AU Superstars as well who will be chasing back-to-back titles in the Under-18 boys division after they upstaged tournament heavyweights Queensland Fiji last year.

This year’s event is set to be a record-breaking one with an almost 50 per cent growth in teams on 2023.

With well over 1000 junior players from across 60 different teams to take the field, from Under-10s through to Under-18s, chances are there are more than a couple of future Wallabies, Wallaroos, All Blacks and Black Ferns set to take the field.

It’s a big weekend for boys and girls alike.
It’s a big weekend for boys and girls alike.

But PYRF organiser Kristin Dunn said it was about much more than just the performances on field.

“We are thrilled to see the Pacific Youth Rugby Festival grow each year, not just in numbers, but in the diversity and talent of our participants,” Dunn said.

“This event is more than just a rugby tournament; it’s a celebration of the rich cultural tapestry that defines our community. We have teams representing a wide range of backgrounds, including New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and South Africa.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for these young players, many of whom are first or second-generation Australians, to connect with their heritage through the sport they love.”

KommunityTV’s coverage of the PYRF will include nearly 150 matches across a big three days of action at Albany Creek Rugby Fields, with all five fields covered across the weekend.

The coverage concludes with the grand final match-ups across each division on Sunday.

The race to the girls Under-16 and Under-18 titles appears to be wide open with reigning champions Marist Ryze opting against chasing the gold again in 2024.

It won’t weaken the competition in the girls ranks at all with Queensland Fiji, AU Superstars, Queensland Kiwis, Queensland Barbarians and Queensland Indigenous Pasifika all registering teams in both age groups.
