After a difficult opening three games of the Dolphins Cup, Emmaus College produced a sensational turnaround against Shalom College to claim a stunning 32-10 win.

After scoring just 18 points in their first three games of the campaign, the hosts were simply unstoppable in attack on Tuesday as they crossed over for seven tries in the space of 41 minutes.

Emmaus College was a class above from the opening kick off and was relentless in attack and defence.

The visitors were left shellshocked by the exquisite ball movement from the Emmaus backs and barnstorming runs from their forwards in a continuous 60-minute barrage.

A double inside the opening 15 minutes from five-eighth Chayce Bayles set the tone for the contest and helped the hosts take an early 10-0 lead.

Shalom looked like they had found a way back into the contest and were far more competitive before tries from Caleb Hare and Will McLaughlin in back-to-back sets helped extend the lead to 18 points at the main break.

After putting in one of the all-time great defensive performances in round 4, the Shalom defence was a shadow of itself in round 5 as Emmaus made line breaks and broke tackles with ease.

One of the players who Shalom struggled the most with was fullback Harrison Meilland, who looked like he would score a try almost every time he touched the ball.

As both sides traded tries throughout the second half, Meilland was electric with the ball in hand.

His lightning pace and illusive work with the ball in hand had his opponents on edge throughout the entire clash. His efforts were rewarded as he scored two key tries to ice the game for Emmaus.

Shalom claimed a resounding 32-0 victory over Emmaus College.

From the outset, Shalom showed their class as they stormed out to a 12-0 lead inside nine minutes

After taking the early lead, Shalom showed glimpses of what the cup side has been capable of in recent weeks with some elite defence on their own tryline.

After an impressive five-minute spell from Emmaus, Shalom showed their prowess in attack as it soon punished the hosts to extend their lead to 18-0 after less than 20 minutes.

The dominance continued into the second half as their unrelenting offensive game added a further three tries while holding Emmaus scoreless.

“I was looking for a response coming back from Confro (Confraternity Carnival),” he said.

“We still got a lot to work on, but we’ve still got a chance and we’re excited about the challenge.

“It is pretty simple maths for us, if we can get a win against them, we know we are going to play finals.

However, while it may be a simple equation to making finals, Kaufusi expects anything but a simple clash when his side travels to Rockhampton this week.

“We got to make sure we prepare ourselves right,” he said.

“I will have a quick look at them for the way they (Emmaus College) played against Rocky Grammar and that was a tight game.

Shalom are down to their last chance.
Shalom are down to their last chance.

“I assume that they are going to be pretty competitive, especially going off last year, they had an awesome year.

“I’m pretty sure a few guys are backing up from last year as well.”

Despite a heartbreaking defeat last week, where The Cathedral College claimed victory in the final minutes of the clash, Kaufusi said spirits are high within the Shalom camp.

“It was good, because I got the chance to cut up the video and we did a video session,” he said.

“So it was good to show them some stuff that we did really, really well and then a few things that we need to improve. I think we got a lot out of that.

“So heading into next week we will do our captain’s run and hopefully put in a good performance.”
