PREVIEW: MAGIC ROUND TO START SEASON WITH A BANG
The NSW NRL Schoolboys Cup season is set to start in explosive fashion with seven games across two days featuring some of the biggest rugby league schools in the state.
While the NRL Magic Round will take over Brisbane this weekend, the next generation will be on show in their own festival of footy on Tuesday and Wednesday.
All seven Peter Mulholland Cup matches will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a partnership with the NRL to broadcast every schoolboy and schoolgirl cup game in 2025.
Round one action begins with three clashes at Woy Woy Oval on Tuesday before a massive four fixtures at Ringrose Park on Wednesday.
Reigning Peter Mulholland Cup champions Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown will feature in the latter when they take on Matraville to start their title defence.
Patrician Brothers coach Noah Meares backed the revamped opening to the competition.
“I think it’s a good initiative,” Meares said.
“It’s a great idea to get all the games played together so everyone knows from the get-go what each team is bringing this year.
“Obviously traditionally it’s a bit all over the place, depending on what team you’re playing or what pool you’re in and some teams have to wait longer to be able to see what they’re next opponents have.
“Hopefully it brings some crowds in too and get some people to come in and watch school footy and the level it’s at this year to start the season.”
Tuesday’s season-opening clash sees All Saints College Maitland take on Holy Cross College from 11am, which will be free to view across News Corp Australia mastheads.
Endeavour Sports High with then battle Farrer MAHS and Hills Sports High is set to take on Central Coast Sports College.
Endeavour will be looking to respond after going down to Patrician Brothers Blacktown in last year’s final.
On Wednesday, Patties begin the day against Matraville followed by Westfields Sports High v St Gregory’s College, Erindale College v Illawarra Sports High and St Dominic’s College v Bass High.
Patrician Brothers Fairfield and Hunter Sports High will have to wait an extra week before they take to the field for the first time on Tuesday, May 13.
Once again teams will be split into four pools with the top two sides from each set to advance to the finals.
The eighth-placed side overall, based off win-loss record and points-differential, will face Victoria’s Storm Cup winner in a finals play-in match.
NSW Schoolgirl Cup action will begin with three back-to-back games on Wednesday, May 14.
Every game from the NRL National Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Cups will be exclusively live streamed here on KommunityTV in 2025.
