WHAT WE LEARNED?
IT’S A NANE TO REMEMBER
Western Australia speedster Angela Nane set the tournament alight with the first try of the 2025 ASSRL Nationals, but she wasn’t done there.
Nane, and her WA teammates, had to weather a fair few early jitters in the opening clash of day one against the NT.
But once she scored her first - a blistering solo effort from dummy-half in which she beat four defenders and stepped back inside the fullback to touch down under the sticks - the nerves washed away.
Nane would go on to score two more blistering tries, dominating the opening clash with her raw pace and impressive balance. The WA side cruised to a 36-12 win with left centre Sienna Hebei getting a double.
THE SKY BLUES MEAN BUSINESS
A lot was made about whether the NSW Combined High Schools girls would be able to live up to their lofty expectations after last year’s dominance.
With a large turnover in talent between tournaments, this year was proving to be an unknown.
But the girls in sky blue answered those questions and then some with a dominant win over rivals NSW CIS.
While Wests Tigers junior Dawn Tui steered the ship from dummy-half and forwards Pesalili-Star Kaliti and Kalani Godinet were extremely impactful in their efforts, in reality everyone in the NSW CHS line-up contributed on opening day.
SEIULI WILL HAVE A LOT TO SAY
On the stroke of halftime Queensland Maroon finally got a chance to see exciting weapon Kyanu Seiuli properly wind up in space.
It sure was a sight to behold.
The boom backrower has a mix of raw power and impressive balance in his movement, which helped get him on the outside of his opposite number before he set up his outside men to stream through for a try to skipper Joey Salafia.
Rather than watch it unfold from a distance knowing his job was done, Seiuli had followed through to the end of the play and could have just as easily snatched the ball over the top of his centre to steal the try at the end. Instead he was the first person picking his skipper up to celebrate.
It was a heart-breaking moment for a gutsy Queensland White who had kept themselves in the contest with their gritty, one-on-one defence throughout the first half.
The Maroon side, spirited by the heroics on the halftime hooter, powered on in the second half with a try double to centre Digby Ioane in the 24-0 win.
SHEPHARD THE COOLEST CUSTOMER
Cometh the moment, cometh the man.
Down by two points as the final siren blared in the background. Defending champs NSW CHS had a kick to tie the game and salvage crucial competition points.
Halfback Cooper Shephard wasted no time walking forward to grab the tee, and with a few last words of encouragement from skipper Nate Horsey, he sent it sailing over the black dot.
It was a kick that defied a day of horrors off the tee at the ASSRL Nationals, and also gave a fitting end to what was a captivating contest between NSW CHS and NSW CCC.
Both sides looked ready to run away with the contest at different stages only for their rivals to slam the door shut with a brilliant last ditch try-saver or a four-pointer against the run of play.
In the end it was fitting that the sky blues managed to snatch a try at the death to lock the contest back up.
ARE THE VICS READY TO STEP UP?
There hasn’t been a change in the Under-15 boys pool structures for some time, but the rise of Victoria as a rugby league state is surely demanding it be looked at.
The Victorian boys showed they are a class above their rivals from Western Australia on Sunday afternoon scoring off their first set with the ball to set an ominous tone.
The Victorians ran in eight tries to one in the 38-4 win with dynamic dummy-half Detroit Mailelaa scoring a double.
At one point the Victorian side scored four tries in 10 minutes, with all of those coming from back-to-back sets.
Whether they have the calibre of players to take the fight to the Pool A juggernauts remains to be seen, but we aren’t ever going to know if they aren’t given the chance.
