Patrician Brothers Blacktown’s mission of back to back premierships will come through the schools own version of the “bash bro’s”, with their front row rotation sending a harsh message to any school wanting to take their premiership away from them.

Starting prop Steven Nunn and interchange Charlie Xuereb set a statement in their first game of the year, showing the Blacktown school’s physicality and hunger has only increased since their Peter Mulholland Cup win last year.

Laced with a bright pink headgear, Eels Harold Matt’s representative Nunn laid the foundation for a dominant win 52-6 over Matraville Sports with a strong back fence carry to kick off the match.

Nunn with his other middles continued to work over Matraville’s forwards, before the pink headgear busted over the tryline to open scoring.

Winger Cobi McCloskey scored not long after on a slick backline move, followed by a long range effort by centre Phoenix Tauasa, before Penrith Harold Matt’s prop Xuereb made his impact felt.

The interchange forward made an immediate difference with his hard carries, being rewarded with a try under the post.

Despite staying in the fight to this point, Matraville started to fall away at the start of the second half, with individual efforts from the Patties halves pairing, Tyler Peken and Jasais Ah Kee leading to tries.

The onslaught continued with second-rower Leo-stipe Latu retrieving a grubber for his first four pointer of the year, and interchange hooker Isaiah Wynbergen receiving an inside ball on the line as soon as he ran on the field.

Despite battling with cramps for the majority of the second half, Patties centre Tauasa capped off his game with his second long range try before heading to the bench, leading his team to pass the half century.

After a disappointing 2024 season which saw Matraville Sports go 0-3, the Eastern Suburbs school showed glimpses of promise at the start of the game.

Hooker Harry Bickhoff capped off a rough day for Matraville with a try.

PREVIEW

The weight of being the hunted – and the pain of last year’s NRL National Schoolboy Cup final defeat – will not affect Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown’s 2025 squad, according to coach Noah Meares.

Patties enter the new Peter Mulholland Cup season as champions and will kick off their title defence with a clash against Matraville Sports High on Wednesday.

The match will be live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV from 10am.

While Patrician Brothers fell to Queensland powerhouse Palm Beach Currumbin in the national final, last year’s otherwise outstanding season will raise the already high expectations for the western suburbs school.

“The past is the past, it’s always a clean slate,” Meares said.

“I’m sure it (the national final defeat) will be in the back of some of their heads but for the most part it’s a new team and new campaign.

“We’ll just focus on getting ourselves right and doing the little things right that we need to do, build the effort stuff early and hopefully build a strong campaign off the back of that.”

Meares said an earlier than usual start to the Peter Mulholland Cup meant the team had limited time together due to many players involved in junior rep systems, including some featuring grand finals the weekend before round one.

However he was confident a core group of players from last year’s side along with some exciting young talents would drive another successful campaign.

“The one I’m most interested in seeing is probably going to be Jasais Ah Kee,” Meares said.

“He played seven for us in the state final and was outstanding last year. He’s had a another big season for the Dragons in the Harold Matts.

“It will be slightly different for him this year where he’ll be the main man in charge of guiding the team around the park.”

Patrician Brothers thrashed Matraville 50-0 in last year’s season opener as Jacob Halangahu, Jared Haywood, Jack Nicholas and Jhett Sydir ran riot at home.

But Meares expected a sterner test this time against the eastern suburbs school.

“I’m sure they’ll come out all guns firing and really want to stick it to us and that’s the target we’re going to have on our backs now after winning the state final,” he said.

“From what I’ve heard they’ve got some good up and coming players.

“I think they’ll be a lot stronger than they were last year, and that’s not saying they weren’t strong, we just put on a really good performance that day.”

The Patrician Brothers versus Matraville clash will be the first of four matches streamed live and exclusive on KommunityTV from Ringrose Park on Wednesday.
