Ignatius Park College has made a statement of its own in round 1 of the Aaron Payne Cup, defeating Trinity Bay 32-6.

Iggy Park made the trek to Cairns for the fixture, and wasted no time in making its presence felt as halfback Chase Sheppard ran in their first try inside five minutes.

When outside back Jerry Mipari got across just moments later, it looked as though the Townsville boys were set to run away with a massive win.

But to their credit, Trinity Bay’s defence was able to hold firm for an extended period of time, and even hit the scoreboard midway through the second half via Cooper Lawson off the bench.

A school that’s still chasing its first win in the Cup will take a lot of positives from passages of play they were able to pull together.

Still, it will be Iggy Park who will feel they’ve laid the foundations for a strong campaign with a convincing victory.

PREVIEW

Breaking its Aaron Payne Cup duck will be the main objective for Trinity Bay State High School as it gets set to begin the 2025 campaign.

The school’s fledgling rugby league program will be put to the test when it takes on perennial contenders Ignatius Park on Thursday.

The Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge clashes will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV, along with the Schoolgirl Cup match between Trinity Bay and St Margaret Mary’s College.

Still relative newcomers to the competition, Trinity Bay is still searching for its first win.

Coach Dustin Stewart has said his side has put the work in to make itself a more competitive Payne Cup outfit in 2025.

“They started a lot of their work at the end of last year,” he said.

“That has rolled through into this year. A lot of work in the gym, a lot of work out on the field.

“We’re quite happy with how they’ve progressed as far as their rugby league knowledge.

“Our big goal is to get that first win on the board for the program.

“If we play our footy the right way, that success will come.”

Trinity Bay will face an Ignatius Park side eager to make a strong start under new coach Will Jack.

Iggy Park will be eager to make amends this season after falling to St Patrick’s College by just four points in the semi-final.

Forward Sitiveni Afu will return to the line up as co-captain alongside halfback Chase Sheppard, while five-eighth Brad Pilchowski and fullback Lincoln Baker are also expected to be influential.

Live streamed action will kick off from 11.30am at Trinity Bay State High with the Cowboys Challenge before the schoolgirls take to the field at 12.30pm, followed by the Payne Cup clash at 1.30pm.
