News Corp commits to live streaming Langer Trophy qualifying clashes on March 9

News Corp has extended its commitment to showcasing the most exciting future NRL talents in Queensland and it all starts much sooner than you think.

News Corp’s unrivalled coverage of the Queensland schoolboys rugby league competitions will go to another level in 2022, and it all kicks off in just over a week.

Pre-season qualifying matches for the Langer Trophy will take place throughout March and News Corp will be there to broadcast all thr action live.

In a bumper two games on March 9, St Mary’s College Toowoomba will play Mabel Park SHS at Ipswich Brothers (3pm) while Caloundra SHS will host Mountain Creek SHS (4pm).

The winner of the St Mary’s versus Mabel Park encounter will be team No.7 into the eight team Langer Trophy match.

Then, on March 23, Redcliffe SHS will play the winner of the Caloundra SHS v Mountain Creek SHS match for position No.8 in the elite schoolboy competition.

It comes as News Corp has expanded its livestream coverage to more matches in 2022 as it takes in both the Payne Cup and the new Dolphin Cup competitions.

The six teams already qualified for the Langer Trophy are Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Keebra Park SHS, Marsden SHS, Ipswich SHS, Wavell SHS and Coombabah SHS.

Caloundra SHS were De Vere Cup (Year 9) winners last season.

The quality of the qualifying games was evidenced by the fact that both Mabel Park SHS and St Marys were in the Langer Trophy last season.

In addition, Redcliffe SHS only lost one match in 2021 - ironically the Langer Trophy final qualifying game.

Queensland Secondary Schools Rugby League chair Andrew Peach said it was great to see such high class teams involved in qualifiers which could be seen by a larger audience courtesy of News Corp’s national livestream reach.

“We are really excited by the high standard of qualifying games in 2022,’’ Peach said.

“It is a great indication of the growth of the competition that we have so many schools competing at this level.

“All three games will be high quality contests. It is great the quality of the competition is putting pressure on us to continue to provide opportunities.’’

3pm: Mabel Park SHS v St Mary’s College

4pm: Caloundra SHS v Mountain Creek SHS

March 23: Redcliffe SHS v winner of Caloundra SHS v Mountain Creek SHS
