An Indonesian football legend has played an important hand in lifting home side Western Australia to its first win in the top division of the Over-55s in more than two years.

Western Australia made a stirring start to its tournament in the Over-55s Division 1, knocking off rivals Queensland by more than four goals.

At the heart of the WA performance was vice-captain Greg Hinchcliffe, the inaugural and only president of the Bali Geckos Aussie rules club.

In the end the goals were shared evenly among the WA squad, as they held on for a 6.5 (41) to 2.0 (12) win, setting up a showdown with Tasmania on Wednesday.

Forget about his generation, the only thing booming about Tony Cook is his right boot.

The Victoria Metro winger played a starring role in the side’s dominant start to the AFL Masters Over-60s tournament.

Cook booted one from near on the 50m circle while he set up two others with some wheeling and dealing down the right wing.

It proved a fruitful side of the field for the Vic Metro side with Stuart Locke and David Whillas also enjoying kicking majors out of the right forward pocket.

The Vic Metro side, who are chasing back-to-back titles in the Over-60s, proved too powerful for the combined Vic Country/NSW side, running out 11.17 (83) to 1.1 (7) winners.

South Coast sharpshooter Franziska Klatt has put the NSW sky blues right in the hunt for the Women’s Over-40s Division 1 title.

After going down to WA in heartbreaking fashion at last year’s AFL Masters National Carnival, the NSW side was determined to start this year’s tournament off on the right foot.

Klatt made sure of it with the Figtree Saints forward booting six majors in the side’s 7.10 (52) to 1.0 (6) demolition of Tasmania.

Simon Ponter and Shane Brewster combined to deliver a big tournament opening win to the combined Vic Metro/Vic Country/NSW side in the Over-35s Division.

The pair of free-running forwards combined for seven goals as the motley crew booted their way to a dominant 10.7 (67) to 5.3 (33) win over the President’s Men side.

PREVIEW

Victoria Metro have already staked their claim for multiple titles with an impressive opening day at the 2024 AFL Masters tournament in Fremantle on Sunday.

Now they hope to add a few more to the list when the rest of their strong contingent hit the field in Fremantle for day two action on Monday.

Vic Metro were one of the stars of the show on a busy opening day across four venues in the Wild West, winning matches in the men’s 45s Division One, men’s 65s and men’s over 50.

Simon Ponter wound back the clock to kick three goals in the 45s win over Victoria Country/ACT, while Ian McCormack landed four in the big 65s success over Queensland/Tasmania.

The Vics make their first appearances on Monday in the men’s 50s Div 2, women’s 40s Div 1, Men’s 55s Div 1 and Div 2.

They will also have players involved in the big men’s 35s clash at Fremantle Park and the President’s Over 70s clash with Western Australia.

One of the highlights of Monday’s draw will be three games back to back from the men’s 50s Division 2 at Fremantle Oval.

South Australia and Victoria Country are first up at 12.20pm (AEST) and are followed by Victoria Metro v Western Australia Black and Western Australia Gold against the 2024 Presidents Men 50s.

East Fremantle Oval will see plenty of the host state, with WA appearing in four of the five scheduled games. including what is looming as a cracking contest with Victoria Metro in the women’s 40s.

Meanwhile, a cracking Men’s 55s Div 1 contest between Victoria Metro and Tasmania opens up proceedings on Fremantle Park.

The day concludes with two excellent match-ups featuring the best of the men’s 35s and then the oldest players at the tournament.
