A three-goal effort by Stephen Meredith, including the sealer in the final minutes, has seen Western Australia Black take down Tasmania in their men 40s opener at the AFL Masters tournament in Perth.

Despite Tasmania having most of the territory in the final quarter, the highly rated visitors were unable to put a major on the board when needed at Fremantle Oval.

They then paid the ultimate price as a Mark Lindsay goal against the run of play and Meredith’s late one sealed their fate.

Tasmania’s Kalon House and onballer Nick Milbourne had plenty of it in the last quarter, but a collective effort by the Sandgropers saw them refuse to yield as they recorded a 7.4 (46) to 5.7 (37) victory.

Earlier, Western Australia Gold ensured the home state would have two wins in the 40s age group at the completion of day one when they handed out a 120-point belting to the South Australia/Northern Territory composite side.

Widely tipped to be a force to be reckoned with at the national carnival, the Sandgropers in the men’s 40s age group had too much for pace and smarts for their opposition.

Finding players in space regularly, they worked their way forward with minimal fuss as they charged to a 19.12 (126) to 1.0 (6) victory.

Powerhouse combination ACT have trounced Western Australia Black in their opening women 35s match at Fremantle Park.

In a brutal all-round display, the polished team from the national capital hammered the Sandgropers to the tune of 72 points while at the same time keeping their scoreless.

Tanya Taylor finished with four goals in a solid forward display, while Kylie Guarino had a strong game with a superb one of her own and several goal assists. Kate Greenacre was also prominent with two majors herself.

Rysha Masters and Justine Rozario did a power of work in defence for WA Black, but the sheer weight of forward entries by the ACT were always going to take their toll.

Queensland have kicked off their Masters campaign with a solid seven-point victory in the women 35s.

Trailing Western Australia White at halftime by four points, which was then extended to 10 points early in the third quarter, the Queenslanders rebounded to run over the top of their rivals in a thrilling contest.

In the final women 35s encounter on day one, Western Australia Gold kept South Australia scoreless while piling on eight goals of their own in a thoroughly dominant display.

Rebecca Meirau was the only multiple goalkicker but the home side had countless avenues to goal as they took turns at peppering the sticks.

Inaccuracy by Western Australia Gold - 8.12 (60) - probably saved South Australia from further blushes.

Carissa Wright delivered a contender for goal of the year in the second quarter when she kicked a superb goal running away from the sticks off the right side of her boot.

Vice-captain Nuria Ushoroff added another late in the term to extend the home side’s lead to 28 points at halftime.

After the main break the WA Gold players took turns at piling on the goals, with former Carlton and Williamstown player Ashlee Thorneycroft responsible for setting up many attacking forays.

Tasmania’s Julian Sturzaker has kicked three goals in the men 35s age group to help the visitors get on the board with 16-point win against Western Australia Black.

Every time the home side appeared to be threatening, the small forward chimed in with a goal to steal the initiative back off their rivals.

Tassie’s Nick Milbourne also kicked a goal in his second full game for his state on the opening day having earlier participated in the men 40s age group.

Western Australia’s masters contingent will turn Fremantle Oval yellow and black on Sunday as they flood the opening day of the AFL Masters National Carnival.

The Sandgropers were unstoppable the last time the AFL Masters National Carnival touched down in Western Australia, but it is a much different looking carnival to four years ago.

That was during the pandemic years when teams from only South Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory travelled.

This time the WA sides will have to contend with the might of Victoria Metro and Victoria Country, last year’s champion state Queensland and NSW athletes.

They have all come in droves, with the 2024 national carnival registering the second-highest number of participants in history at more than 1400, which more than doubles the highest number WA has hosted in the past.

AFL Masters president Steve Eurell said it was exciting to have a full complement of AFL Masters teams from all states and territories for the first time in Western Australia in more than two decades.

“It was a different world back to when we were last here in 2003 with just 32 teams in five male age groups to Over-50s,” he said.

“Like the State of WA, we have come a long way in a relative short space of time, catering to demand for new markets including over 300 women, an Over-70s demonstration match on Monday and two Indigenous Showcase matches next Friday night at Fremantle Oval.”

Despite the extra attention from a fresh crop of interstate raiders, AFL Masters WA president Nathan Dixon said the pleasantries would only stretch so far.

“We are excited to welcome all the states and territories to Fremantle, but all bets will be off once the siren sounds to start each match,” he said.

“Expect the typical Western Australian spirit to shine through this week.”
