The Toowoomba Mountaineers QSL Youth League women’s team continued their impressive start to the season with victories in a double-header weekend against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix and Moreton Bay Suns.

We reveal the biggest keys to success from the Mountaineers’ games here.

Incredible defence

The Mountaineers wins were built off the back of some relentless defence, as they gave up just 42 points in their first game on Saturday, then 53 points on Sunday.

Toowoomba gave their opponents very few easy looks and conceded just two three-pointers for the weekend.

Their lockdown defensive work was clear to see in the third quarter of the game against the Suns, as they held Moreton Bay to just six points.

All-round effort

In Saturday’s clash with the Phoenix, everyone chipped in on the offensive end with four players reaching double-figures for points scored

Halle Shipton (21), Chelsea Jacklin (10), Rebecca Scott (10) and Taya Natalier (10) all led the way for the Mountaineers as they stormed to a 28-point win over the Sunshine Coast.

This was not the first time Toowoomba has had an array of offensive options as five players reached double-figures in their round 1 clash with Logan.

In that encounter, the Mountaineers claimed an emphatic 11-37 win with Shipton again leading the scoring.

Squad depth shines through

Speaking of Shipton, after scoring almost 50 points in her first two games of the season, Shipton was one of the star players who missed the young Mountaineers clash due to the senior QSL game for Toowoomba on Sunday.

Despite missing the likes of Shipton and Conway who were pivotal in the opening clashes, the Mountaineers dug deep to claim a gutsy one-point win over the Suns.

During that clash, everyone chipped in with solid contributions on the offensive end and were immense defensively to take them to a 4-0 start to the season and have already asserted themselves as a team to beat after just two rounds.
