Japan’s prospects of going back-to-back in Saturday’s $10 million Golden Eagle at Rosehill were dealt a blow when the favourite Ascoli Piceno drew barrier 17.

A full field of 20 runners will face the starter this year, the sixth running of the four-year-old set weights contest over 1500m.

The Golden Eagle is now Australia’s second richest race.

Last year the race was won by Japanese raider Obamburumai and this year two more Japanese gallopers, Ascoli Piceno and Corazon Beat, are here to attempt to emulate Collette (2020) as the only females to have won the race.

Ascoli Piceno, regarded as one of Japan’s best milers, was the favourite when markets closed.

Two other Northern Hemisphere raiders are among the acceptors, undefeated French Group 1 winner Lazzat and the William Haggas-trained Lake Forest, a Group 1-placed Group 2 winner.

Leading the local defence are Group 1-winning gallopers Southport Tycoon, Veight, Tom Kitten, Stefi Magnetica and Joliestar.
