RUGBY LEAGUE: Jarrod Lee is optimistic heading into a 10-day run when he could play five games as Australia chases a home victory at the Universities Rugby League World Cup in Sydney.

The Highfields playmaker will be joined by fellow University of Southern Queensland student Michael O'Keefe and Toowoomba talent Mackenzie Reid in the Australia Universities team, which has gathered in Sydney ahead of its first game against England on Friday.

That opening game will be followed by a second pool match against Pacific Islands on Sunday and a third on Wednesday against Ireland.

Australia is a genuine chance to take out the six-team Universities World Cup and would then have to contest the semi-finals next Friday ahead of the final next Sunday.

That means that durability and resilience will be important for the hosts.

Lee was in camp with the Australian Universities team in Kiama, south of Wollongong, for four days and is enjoying being part of a national squad.

"It's been unreal. It is an awesome experience. They are all a good bunch of blokes,” the electrical engineering student said.

Lee thinks the Australian Universities team boasts plenty of talent.

"I reckon we've got the team to win it,” the halfback said. "You've got to be confident.”

The first game against England could be a good gauge for Australia's chances.

"England is supposed to be the toughest. Pacific Islands should be pretty tough as well,” Lee said.
