Cameron Smith might join the galleries at The Players Championship in Florida this week

Cameron Smith is banned from defending his title at The Players Championship this week, but that doesn’t mean he can’t go.

Cameron Smith isn’t kicking cans this week and has vowed to watch the world’s best at The Players Championship in Florida despite being banned from defending the title he won in spectacular fashion last year.

The Queenslander’s move to LIV Golf, for a reported $140m, was enough for officials at TPC Sawgrass to also remove his name from the winner’s reserved carpark.

But given the event is being played just a short drive from Smith’s home in Jacksonville, Florida, he hasn’t ruled out joining the spectators in the galleries, curious as to what the reception could be.

“I’m a bit unsure, that’s where I live,” Smith said.

“I’ll definitely be watching on TV, I think it’s a great event to watch. I grew up my whole childhood watching it.

“I don’t know how it would be received, but even getting out there and watching, walking around in the crowd might be pretty funny.

“I don’t know if I could do heckling.”

Smith, the No.5 player in the world, won The Players and the British Open before making his move to LIV last year.

While he’s still eligible to play the majors, and will defend his Open win, he and the other LIV golfers are banned from all PGA Tour events.
