FOOTBALL: Willowburn FC (WFC) drew first blood in the "Battle of the Birds" on Saturday.

Facing their club counterparts Willowburn White (WW), the team coached by Nic Rundle recorded a lopsided 6-2 win at a rain soaked Commonwealth Oval on Saturday night.

Speaking ahead of the match, Willowburn president Gerard Alchin said there would be plenty of passion in the clash and that proved to be the case.

From the opening whistle the play was physical and robust with neither side willing to give any quarter to their opposition despite the close-knit nature of the club.

Brayden Thrupp opened the scoring for WFC from the penalty spot following a poor challenge before Nik Lawson doubled their advantage shortly after.

Thrupp added a second before Mitchell Tansky scored two goals of his own - his second a free kick from distance that was fumbled by the WW goalkeeper.

Taking a 5-0 lead into the break WFC had the game all but wrapped before Chris Veivers and Harry Soric got their side on the board and Brodie Welch rounded out the scoring for WFC.

"It was a good game," Rundle said.

"For us I think the first half was a lot slicker - we worked a lot harder.

"So we will take the first half and improve on the second."

The scoreline points to a dominate WFC performance but Rundle believed there was "more in the game".

"At 1-0 Beau (Partridge) makes an absolute screamer of a save," Rundle said.

"If it's 1-1 that's a whole different ball game. They (Willowburn White) had four chances to level it at 1-0 and I tell you what if they got one of those it's a lot different.

"It was an evenly matched game and a high intensity one."
