GOLF : Toowoomba will again host Australasia’s leading golfers in February with confirmation this week the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship is returning to City Golf Club in 2020.
The ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia returns to the Garden City where the $150,000 four round tournament will be played from February 13-16.
The championship is the centrepiece of a gala week of player and golf activities at City Golf Club from February 11.
Following 10 years of success in Toowoomba, a new partnership extension will see the tournament enter its 11th year at the club and ensures the Queensland PGA Championship remains a highlight on the schedule in 2020.
The tournament is played a week after the Vic Open and leads into the New Zealand Open the following week.
Reigning tournament champion Daniel Nisbet will head the 2020 entry list.
Nisbet blazed rounds of 66-63-63-64 around the tight City layout to set up a six-stroke win over New South Welshman Harrison Endycott in this year’s event.
“We are pleased that City Golf Club will once again host one of the great events on our calendar,” Nick Dastey, tournaments director Australasia at the PGA of Australia, which owns and operates the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia said.
“The club has done an amazing job of producing a course and tournament atmosphere that keeps them coming back year after year.
“The level of talent on the PGA Tour of Australasia gets deeper each year and clubs like this are a big part of our development.
“I would like to thank City Golf Club for our continued strong relationship and for supporting professional golf.”
Since its move to Toowoomba in 2009, the Queensland PGA Championship has become a highlight for the region and a week-long community festival of golf.
City Golf Club president Ed Britnell believes the tournament provides a wide range of benefits for the Toowoomba community.
“City Golf Club is proud to once again host the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship in 2020 and provide the community the chance to watch and interact with up and coming tour professionals,” Britnell said.
“This tournament has assisted us to promote not only our club, but Toowoomba and surrounding regions as a golf tourism destination.
“We look forward to welcoming the players back once again for another great tournament week, with this being the 11th year of the tournament in Toowoomba.”
