CRICKET: Darling Downs South West Queensland is showing promising signs in the lead-up to the start of the Lord’s Taverners competition.
The side had a 51-run victory in its first trial outing against Wynnum-Manly, despite a tough start to proceedings.
DDSWQ batted first and lost both openers for no score, before Matthew Spanner (76 ret) and Callum Galvin (82 ret) helped rescue the innings, combining in an unbroken stand of 179 for the third wicket.
Middle order batsman Chace Oates chipped in with an unbeaten 34.
With the ball, DDSWQ then restricted Wynnum to 179 with Lachlan Spies taking 3/29, Morgan Bourke 2/23 and Oates 1/9.
Coach Adrian Bidgood said it was a positive start to the season for the side, as they continue to inch closer to the start of the season proper next month.
“It’s always good to get out of the nets and into a game situation and to start the season with a performance like that was very pleasing,” he said.
“Even though it was just a trial game, to recover from 2/0 to post a score of 230 was a great credit to the boys.
“Then the bowlers came out and bowled and fielded to our plans that we have been working on for the past few weeks at training.”
The side will play Norths at Laidley this weekend in their final trial game, ahead of the season opener on September 6.
DDSWQ squad for Laidley: Paarth Menon, Rex Tooley, Matthew Spanner, Callum Galvin, Chace Oates, Kade Martin, Kye Martin, Matthew Butters, Joe Sippel, Joe Fry, Morgan Bourke, Isaac Adamson, Thisaja Samarawickrama, Fletcher Russell.
