DARLING DOWNS School Sport celebrates a special milestone this year - 40 years of providing the region's athletes a pathway to greater success.

Formed in 1979, DDSS region has produced numerous Australian representatives, Olympians, Commonwealth Games athletes and world champions.

Current DDSS regional officer Wayne Beeston said the "region came to be” after the Queensland Educational Department decided on a change to the pathways available to students.

"Before 1979, there were countless zones and regions,” Beeston said.

"It really put the smaller zones and areas at a disadvantage because they weren't able to bring enough students together for teams and the pathways for individuals were a lot tougher.

"The new model is a lot fairer and accessible.”

Since the change, DDSS has flourished - going on to be one of the state's top performers despite having the third smallest enrolment.

"We've produced all manner of top athletes,” Beeston said.

"One 12-years boys cricket team produced five Australian representatives and a current QLD PGA player.”

To celebrate the milestone DDSS is planning two special events on March 1.

"We're planning a student breakfast in the morning and dinner that night,” Beeston said.

"The dinner will be attended by former Darling Downs student athletes Karen Smith, Gemma Etheridge, Matt Denny, Steve Price and Shane Webcke.”
