NETBALL: Sharp shooter Kaylin van Greunen is on target to secure another Queensland jersey, with the 17-year-old Toowoomba netballer setting her sights on the National Netball Championships after being named in the 16 player Queensland Under-19 squad.

Van Greunen, who will be trialling for one of the 14 final positions, is no stranger to representative netball, but she is not taking the task lightly.

“I have amazing coaches who look after me and a very supportive family that make the whole thing less daunting and stressful,” van Greunen said.

“I still have to compete and work hard for a spot in the team, however, I do feel a bit more confident in my ability as I’ve been through it before and have that experience.

“It’s still always really special (to make the team).”

U19 coach Simone Nalatu said the initial trial period was a great opportunity to look at potential players.

“This first block of trainings/selections provided a great opportunity for the coaching group and selectors to work with the athletes before the squad was reduced,” Nalatu said.

“As expected, the athletes made the selection difficult and each one of them put their hand up.

“The new program allows for athletes to go on break with clarity of what is expected of them when they return in early 2023.”

Van Greunen’s move into the U19s is one of several she will be making in 2023.

The now former Darling Downs Panthers star has joined the Bond University Bull Sharks in the Queensland HART Sapphire Series.

The goal shooter will be under the watchful eye of a familiar mentor – Rebecca Stower.

Stower recently joined the Bull Sharks as their new head coach after a lengthy tenure at the Panthers.

“It’s really special to have a coach that I’ve known for a while who supports me and has travelled with me to competitions in the past,” van Greunen said.

“I’m confident that I’m on the right pathway and that I am in good hands.”

The national titles will be held in Darwin in April next year.
