NETBALL: It felt like a daunting task at the time, but Caitlin Fry’s decision to take the coaching reins of her own side has paid off.

With her under-17 Future Panthers side still celebrating their Elite Premier League grand final win, Fry was named coach of the year.

“To be honest among all the noise I just heard my name and I didn’t quite know what it was about,” she said,

“It (being named of coach of the year) is quite humbling.

“A little while ago I had a chat with (Panthers senior coach) Bec Stower and she said she thought it was time for me to coach my own team.

“At the time I was assistant coach of the Panthers and I really loved that role, but Bec thought it would be good for my development.

“I’ve had a lot of support along the way and I can’t thank everyone enough for that support

“The award makes all the sacrifice and hard work worthwhile.”

The U17 Panthers 59-47 defeat of Southport was the perfect end to an impressive season led a young team eager to develop and prosper.

“We have a great group of girls,” Fry said.

“What impressed me most was their commitment to becoming better players during the season.

“They worked hard all season and constantly sought out feedback so they could improve.”
