BOXING: The action was fast and ferocious, as City and Country collided in Toowoomba.

A total of 34 bouts were held across the day for the annual amateur event at Smithy’s TGW Gym, with the Country team coming out on top 18-16.

Trainer Brendon Smith said

“It was a very successful night for amateur boxing, with the Country side winning the cup in an action-packed event from start to finish,” he said.

“The spirit in the arena was incredible and the competitiveness was amazing. It was the best night of amateur fights I’ve seen in a long time.

“Every fight was a tough, competitive match-up, and as much as Country won the cup, every boxer gained an amazing experience.”

Smith gave fight of the honours to Pittsworth boxer Jed Garrett defeating Luke Smith of Nambucca Heads.

“The two heavyweights put on an incredible show,” he said.

“The momentum rocked backwards and forwards and they really went at it.

“Chance Dawes showed good signs of body shots and showed he has the ability.”

It marks the start of a busy period on the amateur scene, with the highly-anticipated Queensland vs NSW event to feature next month.

“It’s now a two week process on selection for the Queensland team to take on NSW on July 24,” he said.

“It was an incredible night that I’m proud to have been a part of. The sport is in good stead at the moment with plenty of rising stars coming through.”

The night was capped off with Toowoomba local Tye Rowsell defeating Javad Khaksar for the Australian Boxing Council Lightweight Title.

In a closely contested bout, Rowsell came out on top in a split decision in his first fight at the weight.
