Concordia student Leroy Malone signs with the Brisbane Broncos

A Toowoomba student has made a big leap in his quest to become a professional NRL player, signing with the Brisbane Broncos.

He may only be 15 years old, but Concordia’s Leroy Malone already has a bright future ahead of him having recently signed with the Brisbane Broncos.

The young fullback was delighted to make the next step in his career and dreams of one day making playing in the NRL.

“It is pretty exciting, it has been pretty good, they have helped me and taught me a bunch of new things that I can use when I play so that has been good,” Malone said.

“It has helped me heaps I have gotten better since I have been training with them.

“I want to play football for the Broncos, they are a good club and I’ve always been a fan.”

Originally from Cherbourg, which was home to current Broncos winger Selwyn Cobbo, Malone is currently boarding at Concordia Lutheran College and playing for Toowoomba Valleys in the TRL.

“I started playing back at home out at Cherbourg then I came here for boarding and I played at Valleys and they have been really good as well,” he said.

“It is a higher level of footy here than back at home and Valleys have taught me a lot of skills to be a better player.”

Malone will now train with a Broncos youth squad on a weekly basis under his new contract, compared to just training with them once a term.

“I played in the Walker Weekend Carnival and they selected me from there and I just did training with them once every term but now that I have been signed I go every week,” he said.

“The Broncos have given me heaps of support and helped me through it.”

As an aspiring young fullback, Malone looks up to Queensland Maroons superstar Reece Walsh and hopes to model his game on the Broncos’ number one.

“He is pretty good, he is quick and has good ball skills,” he said.

Malone’s achievements have brought plenty of joy and pride to his friends and family but he is determined to be a model student while chasing his dreams as a future NRL player.

“They are just excited and proud of me, they want me to do the best I can,” he said.

“My parents are really proud, but they have told me I have to work really hard to

get to the next level and pass everything at school and be a model student.

“Education is important because you must think about life after professional football.

“I’ve been thinking about working in the construction industry as well.”
