RACING: Supporters of Warwick gelding Colpo Di Tamburo remained on good terms with themselves when he maintained his purple patch of winning form at Clifford Park tonight.
Colpo Di Tamburo ($3.10) raced to his third Clifford Park win in the last six weeks for trainer Leo Roche with a determined-finishing effort in the Bindaree Bee Ratings Band 0-68 Handicap (1300m).
The Drumbeats gelding enjoyed a cosey run in third place for apprentice Nick Keal before pouncing on the leaders over the final 100 metres to score by a short neck from $2.40 favourite Vibrato.
“It was a good ride. That’s the way to ride him, from in behind them like that,” Roche said.
Colpo Di Tamburo has scored all of his six career wins from 17 runs for Roche after joining his three-horse stable late last year
“We bought him at a ready-to-run sale with some other partners and they pulled out so I bought him out,” Roche said.
Colpo Di Tamburo’s victory completed a race-to-race double for Keal who earlier helped Bel Beau ($13) end his run of outs with a strong-finishing effort in the Pakaderinga Feedlot Class 2 Plate (1210m) for trainer Kevin Kemp.
Toowoomba filly Violet produced one on the night’s most impressive performances when she overcame a bungled start to blitz her Women Of Lot Feeding QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1210m) opposition.
Violet ($1.65 fav) rounded up her rivals approaching the home turn and raced clear in the home straight for Josh Oliver to down solid-finishing Naval Strike – who was also tardily away – by 3¼ lengths.
Tonight’s run was Violet’s first since August for trainer Michael Nolan and owner Kim McCasker is confident the Tycoon Ruler three-year-old has plenty of scope going forward.
“It was a nice return,” McCasker said.
“She was slowly away and then had to come around them wide, but it didn’t matter, she was just too good for them.
“She puts in every race and trial and the good thing about her is I think she’ll eventually get over 2000 metres.”
THE WIN
COLPO DI TAMBURO is proving to be worth his weight in gold for Warwick trainer Leo Roche and his growing band of supporters with a surge of winning career form and again he put his rivals to the sword with another dashing victory in Saturday night’s Ratings Band 0-68 Handicap.
THE TRAINER
THE TOM BUTTON team picked up its travelling expenses and then some with two runners for two winners with Toga Picta (Class 4) and Repulse (Maiden Plate) both getting the cash.
THE RIDER
KENJI YOSHIDA picked up his first rides for trainer Tom Button on Saturday night and turned them into a race-to-race winning double with good displays aboard Toga Picta and Repulse.
FROM THE STAND
Race 1: A quietbetting Class 2 to start the evening off; the favourite Maidenover was a shortener on the QOP but a drifter on track with 1.80 bet and no real takers. Fishburger went into the book at 3.50. There was rough specking for Checkmate King at 41.00 and Homeland saw small money at 41.00 also. The winner Bel Beau was backed by the connections at 14.00 to start the bookie off on a losing note.
Race 2: A Class 68 where there was small money for all the runners. Vibrato went into the book at 2.70 and there was a phone bet of $800 at 2.60. There was small specking for Wiccan Rede at 14.00. The winner Colpo Di Tamburo was 3.20 into 3.10 at the jump for a break square result.
Race 3: Another quiet betting Benchmark 55 race with a sprinkling of money for all runners. The winner Fast Arli was the big shortener of the night, 5.50 into start 4.60, and luckily for the bookies the money did not come back to the track. As all the money went on late, the totes held up.
Race 4: Punters had it down to two runners and that’s how the betting went. McMahon was the first to move on the QOP 3.20 into 3.00. Then the money came for the winner Toga Pita 3.90 into start 2.90. The track bookies were lucky as the phone money did not reach the track.
Race 5: A good maiden betting race. Fizz was easy to lay at 5.00. The bookies had to bet 3.30 to put Don’t Look Now in the book . The winner Repulse was then on the move on the QOP, 3.20 into start 2.70 and unders on the tote.
Race 6: Whostoppedtherain was the first to be laid and there was a phone bet of $600 at 10.00. Punters were keen for Voilet and when the 1.80 went off the punters chimed in at 1.70. A phone bet of $1500 at 1.70 and follow-up cash bets made this race the worst result of the night for the bookies.
Race 7: A tricky race for punters to finish off on. The early money was on Tatchilla and bookies pushed out Snap On and as much as 3.00 was bet when priced went up. Knucklebox was easy to lay at 3.80. Again, as was the patter for the night, late money came for the winner Dame Ellie, 9.00 into start 7.50 and it was hit on the totes to pay well unders. Overall bookies went home small winners on the night.
