City golf showpiece to reach new audience

Television coverage another first for Queensland PGA Championship.

GOLF:

The progressive Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship goes to another level this year when the City Golf Club showpiece reaches a new audience.

The 2020 tournament next week will be telecast to national and international viewers with the final two rounds of the championship shown live on Fox Sports television.

The PGA and City Golf Club will confirm viewing and channel details next week.

“Fox Sports coverage is one of the major additions we proudly welcome to this year’s tournament,” City Golf Club golf operations manager Andrew Webb said yesterday.

“The coverage will be available to a vast audience.

“It’s exciting news, and the final details will be announced next week.”

Sunshine Coast professional Daniel Nisbet defends his 2019 title when he joins a 156-player field next Thursday considered to be the best assembled in Toowoomba since City Golf Club became home to the championship in 2019.

“I think this year’s field looks to be the strongest in player quality and depth we’ve had for the tournament here at City,” Webb said.

Confirmed starters familiar to golf followers include Marcus Fraser, Nick O’Hern, Peter Lonard, Matthew Millar, Jake McLeod and Brad Kennedy.

Kennedy – the 2013 Queensland PGA Championship winner – is the highest-ranked player in this year’s tournament at number 141 in the world.

Gatton’s multiple European tour winner Andrew Dodt returns to City next week in search of a Queensland PGA victory to go with his 2014 Queensland Open trophy.

Toowoomba will be represented by City Golf Club qualifiers Anthony Timms, Wade Edwards and Quinn Croker.

Leading Australian amateur and former Dalby and City member Lawry Flynn and City Golf Club professional Chris Britnell are confirmed starters.

Thursday’s field will be finalised on Monday afternoon after this year’s qualifying tournament.

About 77 hopefuls hit off at City on Monday morning hoping to qualify for approximately 50 positions still available in Thursday’s starting field.

The qualifying field includes Webb, Matt Britnell and Ian Esson.

Spectators are welcome at Monday’s qualifying play from about 6.30am.
