RACING : His victory was a skinny one, but jockey Jim Byrne is confident more wins are in store for Brisbane three-year-old Chicago Bull after his breakthrough performance today at Clifford Park.

Chicago Bull notched his first win at start number six for Eagle Farm trainer Tony Gollan with an all-the-way effort in the Neil Mansell Concrete Maiden Plate (1200m).

The $1.45 favourite gave his supporters a few nervous moments when challenged in the home straight but he rallied to outlast Grand Barrail ($5) by a short neck.

Naval Strike ($15) ran home promisingly to be a further neck back third.

Byrne believes while Chicago Bull found plenty over the concluding stages of today’s race he will be better suited when ridden more conservatively.

“It’s probably not the way to ride him,” Byrne told Sky Racing.

“The other morning we worked him off a horse in blinkers and he really just powered to the line.”

Byrne said despite his reluctance to lead the race Chicago Bull’s speedy jump dictated his tactics.

“Obviously you’ve got to take advantage of that and you’ve really got to ride him like he’s the best horse in the race,” Byrne said.

“I never really like leading here (Clifford Park).

“It’s always a tough task.

“I think there’s better races to come (for him).

“He’ll be able to string a couple more together I think.

“He’s a nice looking horse

“He gets a little bit agitated, but today I was very pleased with the way he relaxed.

“That was the most important part.”

The Gollan stable made it two wins for the day when former New South Wales five-year-old Deladies Boy ($3.20 fav) ended a long run of outs in the Pro-Clear Class 3 Handicap (1625m).

The former Snowden stable member scored at his second run for Gollan following a copybook Baylee Nothdurft ride.

Deladies Boy safely held Louie La’joy ($8) to score by a 1½ lengths.

Nothdurft completed a race-to-race double with an upset win on Hydrangea ($8) for Toowoomba trainer Mark Currie in the Charlton Tyre Service Fillies and Mares Benchmark 65 Handicap (1300m).

Hydrangea arrived with a well-timed run to down $2.50 favourite Maidenover, who looked the likely winner on straightening after kicking clear on the home turn, by a half length.

Takittothelimit ($16) ran home late for third.
