AUSSIE RULES: Darling Downs fans are the envy of Aussie rules supporters Australia wide.
In the past month Toowoomba has played host to two Brownlow Medallists and multiple AFL premiership winners.
Following in the footsteps of Brisbane Lions great Jason Akermanis, who played for South Toowoomba Bombers earlier this month, Dane Swan ran out for Coolaroo on Saturday.
The Collingwood Magpies superstar was a standout at Rockville Oval in Coolaroo’s big win over University Cougars.
AFL Darling Downs competition manager Jana Anderson the presence of Akermanis and Swan for special one-off matches only boosted an already thriving local Aussie rules scene.
“It has been fantastic to see the continued growth after a lot of sports are still bouncing back from Covid,” she said.
“Jason Akermanis and Dane Swan have also brought upon a new excitement in the senior men’s competition, giving an exciting flare to the middle of the season.
“It creates an interest from grassroots all the way up the pathway to senior men’s and women’s, and the spectators get to enjoy some high-quality football, with the added bonus of two Brownlow Medallists joining the AFLDD ranks.”
A huge crowd turned out for Swan’s run with junior players showing off their speed in sprint competitions at halftime.
Fans will also plenty of other reasons to celebrate in the coming weeks with the competition set to host a Pride Round on July 16.
Dalby, Goondiwindi, South Burnett and Toowoomba will host matches.
