RUGBY LEAGUE: Valleys has continued to pile the pressure on the top of the TRL Premiership standings with another big win.
Coming up against a low-flying Highfields Eagles outfit at Herb Steinohrt Oval, the Roosters hot start proved too much to handle as they raced away to a 34-10 victory.
Dwayne Duncan powered his way over the line from close range to open the scoring inside 10 minutes, before Brock Diment finished off a strong backline movement to stretch the lead to 10.
When a flying Alex Hinch capitalised on a Duncan grubber, Highfields looked to be struggling at 18-0 down at the break.
The visitors responded out of the sheds, with a bit of Pat Templeman magic putting Thomas Hatch over.
Templeman was again in the thick of things, darting from dummy half close to the Valleys line and putting Sean Hamel into space, regathering a Diment strip on his winger to close the gap to 18-10.
Valleys again switched on to close out the contest late, with Diment’s second along with tries to Sam Cocker and John Maila sealing the win.
“We got out to a good start and laid a good platform with our physicality and ball control,” coach Matt Schulze said.
“To Highfields credit they stayed consistent and got to within eight, but we were able to kick away late. We’re trying to put that full performance together for 80 minutes.
“I thought early in the first half our execution was great. We ran really hard and played aggressively.
“I felt like we out-muscled them. They were tough, but I thought we ripped in really well.”
Filling in at the fullback role for an injured Dylan Chown, Diment turned in another man of the match display.
“Brock’s been exceptional. He’s a very good player that can play anywhere from one to seven,” Schulze said.
“Dylan is keen to get back next week but I think Wattles will be the earliest (in round seven). It’s still early in the year.”
