Starting with an 8m handicap and the rest of the Postle Gift field behind him, Hamish Macintosh’s plan was simple.
The 23-year-old Brisbane sprinter, who admitted to some pre-final nerves, knew he had to get low and run through the line at the end.
“You really have to run your race in these things,” Macintosh said.
“Starting at the front I didn’t know where anyone was.
“My focus is to get low, drive through the start and push hard all the way through from there.
“Not knowing where anyone is you have to just keep running all the way through, which I did.
“Winning my first gift was pretty amazing.”
Macintosh crossed the line in 7.68 seconds and while he loved the occasion and atmosphere, his Pittsworth run will most likely be his only gift appearance this season.
“I was a bit nervous before the races, but once I’m down in the blocks I try not to think too much,” he said.
“It’s all really muscle memory and training from there.
“Competing out there (Pittsworth) was great, a few of my friends who I train with were in various races, but that’s probably the only gift I will compete in.
“My main focus is getting ready for the regular (athletics) season, and events like this are a great way to do that.”
