Brisbane capitalises on Neers' turnovers

Turnovers prove costly in Toowoomba Mountaineers loss to Brisbane Capitals.

BASKETBALL: A Tim Coenraad three-point master-class bought about the Mountaineers' demise on Saturday.

Coenraad's 37 points (seven from 11 three pointers) and immense defensive pressure from his Brisbane Capitals saw the Mountaineers fall to a 125-97 defeat.

Mountaineers chairman John Gouldson said the Illawarra Hawks NBL forward proved to be a major influence.

"We led by a point at half-time and three quarter time,” Gouldson said.

"But in that fourth quarter he (Coenraad) absolutely blitzed us - he couldn't miss from three point territory.

"They really stepped up their defence as well in that last quarter.

"We didn't protect the ball well enough and they scored a lot of points of steals and turnovers.

"You can argue sometimes that fouls weren't called but at the end of the day we just weren't good enough looking after the ball.”

Two key statistics ultimately prove Gouldson's thoughts on the game with the Mountaineers committing 26 turnovers to the Capitals' 12 and conceding 38 points from turnovers while only scoring 13.

A win would've helped the Mountaineers consolidate their position in the QBL top eight.

"The boys will go away lick their wounds and regroup,” Gouldson said.

"Danny (Morseu) will have them working hard this week and I'm confident we can bounce back with a win at home this weekend.”

The Mountaineers women also lost to the Capitals 99-41.
