LAWN BOWLS : A bronze medal win by West Toowomba Bowls Club ladies team during last weekend’s fours competition provided a local highlight at this year’s Bowls Queensland State Champions of Champions tournament.
The event is this year hosted by North Toowoomba Bowls Club with fours, pairs and singles play on show from last Saturday through until this morning’s singles’ finals.
The West Toowoomba medal combination featured Imelda Brumpton, Lorraine Callaghan, Pauline Handley and Lorraine Zimmerman.
The club Helensvale combination of Andrew Howie and Nathan Rice surged to an impressive gold medal win in the men’s pairs final.
Howie and Rice didn’t have things all their own way up against Hamilton’s John Newell and Jason Moore.
Howie and Rice took an early 9-5 lead but Newell and Moore fought back to level at 9-all and 12-all.
It was shot for shot after 14 ends before Howie and Rice closed it out to win 24-18.
In a closely contested ladies’ pairs match Mt Gravatt’s Debbie Logan and Glenys Read held off Elliott Heads’ combination Wendy Campbell and Lorelle Hofsteeter to win 19-14.
Singles finals will be decided this morning with play expected to finish around 11am followed by presentations.
Players have praised North Toowoomba Bowls Club greenkeeper Dave Howard for presenting outstanding playing surfaces for the championship.
■ THE team of Jake Rynne and Jo Walsley won the 2019 Prestige Mixed Pairs tournament played last weekend at Toowoomba Bowls Club.
Runner-up was young Brisbane brother-and-sister team Isabella and Bradley Lawsom from the Hamilton club.
Third placed resulted in a tie between Toowomba club mother-and-son pair Justin Weir and Kaylene Weir who shared the honour with Pine Rivers combination Janette Healy and Paul Jobson.
