Australian champ grabs Kings Royal crown

Victorian and reigning Australian champion Kye Walters won the Kings Royal in Kingaroy on Sunday night taking home the $10,000 winners cheque in Australia’s richest and most prestigious Modified Sedan race.

In front of a capacity crowd at Kingaroy Showgrounds, Walters won from Toowoomba Speedway club member Aidan Raymont with Aidan’s brother Mark in third spot.

Walters and Darren Lester, who was highest point scorer, started on front row.

Raymont from starting position three put the pressure on Walters with the pair waging a two-car war for the entire 50 lap feature, trading paint from door panels and concrete from the wall lap after lap swapping the lead numerous times.

Toowoomba’s Nathan Macdonald entered the battle 15 laps in after working his way to third until a power steering issue ended his night.

Rodney Pammenter also has some mechanical issues after a brilliant race coming out of the B Main.

Brisbane’s Mick Shelford did not make the feature race flipping his car numerous times before coming to rest on the concrete wall.

Shelford wasn’t injured in the crash and headed straight to the bar to meet his brother-in-law who was already there.

“We didn’t win Australia’s richest race, but we sure had the biggest crash in Australia tonight,” Shelford said to brother-in-lay Paul.

The pair then headed home to build a new car in preparation for the Australian title in Tasmania in March.
