Ash rapt in return to grassroots footy day

Star NRL halfback Ash Taylor casts his eye over rising aboriginal rugby league talent.

RUGBY LEAGUE: Former Brothers and current Gold Coast Titans halfback Ash Taylor wound back the clock for an early taste of 2020 rugby league at Oakey today.

Taylor was among hundreds of spectators at the 2020 Warriors Reconciliation Carnival showcasing aboriginal rugby league talent from Toomelah to Charleville lining up in the 10-team knockout competition.

Taylor is preparing for an important season at a personal level with the Titans who are looking to lift their stocks in 2020 under new coach Justin Holbrook.

But today was all about a return to grassroots level, including acting as a team water runner.

Today’s team’s included the Ash Boney Memorial side.

“Ash Boney played in my knockout team at Dirranbandi and I’m here today to support the team and be part of a great day,” Taylor said.

“I think it’s important for rugby league that we have carnivals like this.

“I’m not here for any special reason, just to be a part of it and help promote aboriginal rugby league.

“It’s a fun day and awesome standard of football.

“It’s great Warriors put it on and I come to as many as a I can.

“I’m back training with the Titans and looking forward to the season.

“I’m looking at maybe being a part of the upcoming Nines competition and playing in the All Stars game.”

Oakey club president Brendan Dolan welcomed the opportunity for the Bears to host this year’s carnival.

“It’s a top day of rugby league, very well run and it’s great for Oakey Bears to be hosting the carnival this year,” Dolan said.
