Just hours before a daunting first training session with his new NBA team, Ben Simmons was in the middle of an adorable Valentine’s Day surprise for his partner Maya Jama.
The couple are rumoured to have got engaged last year and the popular British TV presenter was spotted in January sporting a $1.1 million diamond engagement ring.
The Australian went all out to spoil Jama with a romantic surprise that included covering their New York pad with flowers and candles.
The 27-year-old shared the moment with her 2.4 million followers in a series of videos posted to her Instagram stories.
The videos showed her and Simmons cuddling in front of a mirror. Her posts also showed their apartment was completely covered in flowers, including rose petals being spread across the bedroom and bathroom.
She also laughed at the sight of crates of yellow and white flowers clogging up a living area floor. She captioned one video by saying the boxes of flowers — which all spelled out a letter — were supposed to spell out “Happy Valentines” but couldn’t be displayed properly because there wasn’t enough room in their apartment.
The besotted Melbourne product has completely lost control when it comes to spoiling his squeeze.
The former Sixers guard, who is still yet to play in the NBA this season citing mental health issues, was first linked to Jama in 2021 following his break up with Kendall Jenner.
They later made an appearance at Wimbledon together in July.
His affectionate display on Tuesday (AEDT) came just hours before he was seen in public for the first time alongside his new Brooklyn Nets teammates.
As reported by The New York Post, Simmons was at the Barclays Centre on Monday (local time), reporting to the Nets during a shoot-around training session ahead of their game against the Kings
It was the first time in about four months where he was seen happy on the basketball court.
The last time Simmons was seen in an NBA game, he was passing up a dunk in Game 7 of last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals, after which he received little support from 76ers star Joel Embiid or coach Doc Rivers.
The 25-year-old refused to return to the team before he was thrown out of practice for reportedly declining to sub into a drill. Citing mental health issues and requesting a trade, Simmons left the team again.
Simmons’ mental state is unclear, and he has yet to talk publicly, but he has joined the Nets and begun introducing himself around the organisation, a positive first step following Friday’s blockbuster trade.
After meeting his teammates, the next step would be for Simmons to begin practising with them, which could happen as soon as Wednesday.
