OLYMPICS: The streets of Allora will be awash with colour when the town gathers to celebrate one of its heroes on Friday.
Allora will honour two-time Olympian Matthew Denny with a welcome home parade after the thrower starred at the Tokyo Olympics.
Denny produced an inspirational effort in the final of the discus, throwing a personal best of 67.02 metres.
A throw of 65.94m saw him progress to the final eight, as competitors tried to chase down Swedish powerhouse Daniel Stahl’s mark of 68.90m.
Needing to better Austria’s Lukas Weisshaidinger’s mark of 67.07m to secure a medal, Denny threw a personal best in his last throw, but unfortunately it was just five centimetres short of the mark, seeing him finish fourth.
“The whole town was tuned into the final,” Allora Regional Sports Museum president Perry Cronin said. “If you weren’t watching you probably would’ve been run out of town.
“It was really special watching him compete.
“He’s a proud Allora boy and his family has strong ties to the community, so we’re eager to honour him.”
Starting at the Allora Freedom Fuel at 2.30pm, Denny will work his way through town before finishing at the museum.
“Students from both the schools will be lining the streets,” Cronin said.
“We’d really like to see a good turnout – bring your flags, balloons and streamers – to celebrate Matt’s achievements.”
