The eulogies for the Melbourne Demons had already been written but the scenes in the rooms after the game said much more than words.

Melbourne “are back” in the premiership race with a brilliant 58-point win over contenders Brisbane, and the finals-like game brought out finals-like celebrations at the Gabba.

Captain Max Gawn quickly led his teammates off the ground after his post-game interview where he said he didn’t like to talk about last year – instead he was focused on 2022.

And after a big rendition of the team song, cameras inside the rooms showed remarkable “Wolf of Wall Street”-like celebrations with the players going wild.

As Christian Petracca started with the hand over heart thumping, everyone got involved with drinks flying.

“They mean business, clearly,” Fox Footy’s Nick Riewoldt praised.

“They’ve got off the ground I reckon quicker than other team in the competition. They are straight off, in the rooms.

“That’s as convincing that performance as when they were (undefeated) in round 10.

“The way they celebrated, I think they think they’re back.”

Jonathan Brown said the fact Gawn refused to discuss the 2021 drought-breaking success showed they were in the right headspace.

“They’re not resting on the laurels of last year,” he said.

“They are motivated to continue on and win another flag. They were magnificent tonight.

“They look like they’re shaping up beautifully to contend against Geelong.”

Garry Lyon said the stunning win over Brisbane – Melbourne’s 11th straight away win – was “a message” for their challengers.

“They’re not done with,” he said.

Coach Simon Goodwin said he was “proud” of his players after the effort on Friday night.

“It was just brilliant the way the players went about it,” he said.

“To be sitting in this position, and give ourselves the chance, as most coaches will say that season is now done and we start another one.

“We’ll give ourselves the best chance to perform.

“That was a finals like build up, a finals like atmosphere.”

The win lifts Melbourne up into second spot, with their final standing awaiting the result of Sunday’s St Kilda v Sydney result.
