‘No one trusts you’: AFL legend savages Jake Stringer

An AFL legend has applied the blowtorch to a wantaway Essendon star as he eyes a blockbuster trade to a third club.

Is Barrass worth more than pick 14?

Jake Stringer has come under heavy fire as he appears set to land at his third AFL club.

The 30-year-old is seeking a move away from Essendon as an ugly contract standoff plays out following the end of the season.

The contracted forward is testing the market to chase a more lucrative deal after the Bombers were reportedly reluctant to offer up a multi-year deal.

Stringer triggered a clause for a $400,000 deal for 2025, but his desire to ink a longer deal ultimately saw him seek a move.

It appears he will now request a trade to the GWS Giants as soon as the club indicates it wants him.

“So the situation with Stringer is the Giants are yet to fully confirm they want him,” Morris said on SEN Breakfast.

“It’s expected they will, but they’re doing their due diligence. It’s expected that they will say, ‘Yes, we want him’, but they’re yet to fully say it.

“When that does happen, Stringer will want to get there on a two-year deal, and Essendon will be very open to letting him go as well. But it won’t be for much.”

Herald Sun journalist Jay Clark also reported Stringer is “seriously considering” the proposal on the table from the Giants, adding he would be paid in the realm of $450,000 per season plus bonuses.

Multiple reports have indicated Stringer — who booted 42 goals this year — would pen a two-year deal if a move to the Giants was agreed to by all parties.

But as a Stringer move draws closer to fruition, Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd took aim and labelled him untrustworthy.

“I see players with nowhere near the ability of Jake Stringer who get two, three, four years (deals). There’s not many players who kick 42 goals in this game,” Lloyd said on 3AW radio.

“But because of your inconsistency — both on the field and off the field — no one trusts you. There is not the trust in you … and even your own club don’t have it.

“Bombers internally wouldn’t be fussed. They probably hope he finds another club, which is telling them he hasn’t got it right even at this age.”

A move to the Giants would bolster their forward line and would place him alongside Jesse Hogan and Toby Greene.

A potential trade would be low risk for the Giants who could offer him a two-year deal on a reported $450,000 plus bonuses.

The latter of GWS’ two third-rounders is expected to be tabled to the Bombers in a trade.

Essendon list boss Matt Rosa acknowledged there’d been “some interest” in Stringer, adding discussions would continue with the forward’s camp.

“We’ll see where that lands,” Rosa said on Monday.

“We’ll keep in constant contact with Jake’s management. We understand there’s the aspect of (contract) tenure that’s been discussed, but we’ll continue to work through that (situation).”
