‘Go the Brions!’ The words may not roll off the tongue, but it’s the catch cry all of Queensland will bellow across a mammoth Grand Final weekend.
Taking his passion to the nth degree, Norman Park man Duncan Turnbull is proudly donning a half and half Broncos, Lions jersey.
Strutting around the River City, the “Brions jersey” has fostered envy and the occasional “odd look”.
“I thought, if they both make it I’m gonna buy two new jerseys and ask our friend Simona, a very accomplished dressmaker, if it’s possible to tie them together,” Duncan said.
“I did get some weird looks, people walked across the road and said, ‘where’d you get that from? I want one’- it’s been a conversation starter.”
Even though both team’s emblems are upon his chest, Duncan said the Broncos are where his heart lies strongest.
“It’s a hard split, but I’m a diehard Bronco and always have been,” he said.
“Like anybody from Brisbane would say though, even if it’s Brisbane Darts I’m going to follow Brisbane Darts.”
Duncan and his family will be spreading Grand Final fever in the rural area of the state on Saturday, before returning to the city for the NRL’s showpiece.
“It’s too hard to get to Melbourne and I hate Sydney, they don’t want me there and I don’t want to be there.
“We’re watching the AFL at the Royal Exchange in Kilcoy and then back for a barbie at my place for the NRL.”
The harmony of rival codes throughout this September period is represented on Duncan’s jersey, the way it should be.
“Lions fans are following Broncos and Broncos are following Lions, everyone’s on board and upbeat, it’s beautiful.”
