‘Shut up, Nat’: Kochie’s blunt reply to Sunrise co-host over AFL sledge

David Koch was thrilled with Port Adelaide’s big win on Sunday, but his Sunrise colleagues quickly opened up a wound that is yet to heal.

David Koch was all smiles after Port Adelaide star Ollie Wines won the Brownlow Medal on Sunday night, but his team’s exit from the finals still stings.

The Power chairman heaped praise on Wines for becoming the first player from the club to collect the AFL’s highest individual honour, but it wasn’t long before Koch’s TV colleagues on Sunrise reminded him about Port’s staggering loss to the Western Bulldogs in the preliminary final.

Koch, on holidays, called in remotely to Monday morning’s show as the panel spoke to Wines, who paid tribute to his family and the entire club for the role they’ve played in his success. The 26-year-old joked his mum would be “hurting” after a night spent celebrating with champagne when Koch revealed she didn’t answer the phone for a surprise guest appearance on the breakfast program.

Fill-in Sunrise co-host Matt Doran, a Melbourne fan, jokingly suggested Wines would look good in Demons colours as Max Gawn and Co. attempt to bring home the club’s first premiership in 57 years when they face the Bulldogs in this weekend’s grand final.

But Koch was having none of it.

“You just better take your chance this weekend because it’s the only chance you’re going to get,” he said. “We’re coming for you next year.”

Koch’s regular co-host Nat Barr tried to put a positive spin on the end of the year, but her words were another dagger into the heart of Koch after a golden chance at grand final glory went begging this season.

“Much better way to end the season (with a Brownlow) than the way they did (against the Bulldogs), so good on them,” Barr said, full of sincerity. “I’m just saying how great it is that they’ve ended like this.”

Doran cringed and suggested she had twisted the knife by bringing up the loss to the Bulldogs again.

“Kochie’s going to have a word to you after this,” he said.

Koch didn’t want to be reminded of the preliminary final defeat.

“Shut up, Nat,” he said. “Shut up.”

It was a lighthearted segment that all parties took in good fun — before Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac stirred the pot further.

“Kochie obviously took the week off thinking he’d be preparing for the AFL grand final and that didn’t quite happen, did it,” he said. “But it’s good to see Kochie getting some joy this morning.

“At least we were in the finals,” Koch replied.

“Well, you’re not anymore,” Mac said.
