How to secure new Tasmania Devils membership, meet the club mascot

The Tasmania Football Club has celebrated its first anniversary by unveiling its brand new mascot. Meet them here and see how you can take your membership even further.

Tasmania Devils Football Club's newest recruit Rum'un the Devil

The first anniversary of Tasmania Football Club has been celebrated by the arrival of another piece of the state’s AFL puzzle— a 6’8 Devils mascot called Rum’un along with a new selection of memberships ranging up to $300.

The club’s 2025 launch was hosted by triple premiership Tassie Tiger Jack Riewoldt alongside 11-year-old North Hobart player Katie Foale at the Theatre Royal on Tuesday, and livestreamed for all to see.

The star of the show was the big green giant, a Tasmanian devil caricature named Rum’un after an Tasmanian slang term for someone eccentric, odd, cheeky or a characterful person.

It took nine months, 12 bags of old school polo shirts, track pants and disused backpacks, as well as imagination and ingenuity, to build Rum’un.

TFC executive officer Kath McCann said the club was proud of its colourful creation, also known as its “new recruit”.

“A rum’un is a uniquely-Tasmanian character and a term of endearment, so now we’ve got our own cheeky Rum’un,” Ms McCann said.

“Rum’un is going to play a really important role in participation.

“We are working alongside the team at AFL Tasmania to get out into schools to drum up support and participation.

“Since the establishment of the club we have already seen a 40 per cent uplift in participation across Tasmania.

“Rum’un will start to appear at events all across Tasmania. His first will be at Agfest (May 1-3).”

The Devils’ 207,000 foundation members have the chance to renew their commitment to the TFC or go harder with new memberships up to $300.

“We never thought we’d be in a situation with 207,000 founding members and what I learned really quickly was not only did people want to come onboard, they are hungry for content.

“So will make sure we continuously add more content, assets, more team plays, more stories and more opportunities for our community to engage with our club.”

Devils chief executive Brendon Gale said Rum’un reflected his club.

“He is uniquely Tasmanian, handcrafted and created with grit and determination representing our whole island. Rum’un is also a little bit cheeky,” he said.

“These characteristics are all true to the Tasmania Football Club, a club that represents our whole state and who does things our way.”

The club avoided the temptation to take the easy route.

“There were plenty of opportunities to find mascots from other places and bring them in,” Ms McCann said.

“But in testament to the Devils and the great work we’ve done so far, we thought it was a great opportunity to partner with a local organisation, and Terrapin [Puppet Theatre] are synonymous with Tasmanian arts and culture and we struck a great relationship with the collaboration.

“We feel that Rum’un has an impact visually but it’s the heart and soul of Rum’un that represents the Tasmanian people, particularly young Tasmanians, which for us is such an important part of the future of this football club.”

Uniforms were donated from schools that had green in their identity.

“They have all come together to create the fur,” Ms McCann said.

“We actually did a residency at New Norfolk District High School and the students there worked to create the fur alongside the Terrapin crew, all of which has been hand crafted into the mascot you see today.”
